Explore Norway: A Semester Abroad at NTNU

Spending a semester abroad is a life-changing experience, and for Lisa, a 4th semester EuroMPM student, her time at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim was unforgettable. From August to December 2024, she immersed herself in Norway’s academic, cultural and natural landscapes, gaining valuable insights and memories along the way. As part of her Master’s programme, Lisa had the option of either studying abroad or completing an internship in her third semester. Given her previous work experience and passion for Scandinavia – and Norway in particular – she quickly chose the former. With breathtaking landscapes and a strong social system that ensures a quality education, Norway proved to be an excellent choice. Lisa found Norwegians to be reserved but incredibly friendly. Despite not knowing the language, communication was easy as most Norwegians are fluent in English. Cultural differences were minimal, given the similarities between Norway and Germany, which made adapting to life in Trondheim quite easy.

Academically, Lisa complemented her subject-specific courses with an ‘Introduction to Norway’ course, which deepened her understanding of the country’s culture and history. She also recommended NTNU’s Norwegian language courses for those eager to learn a new language and further immerse themselves in local life.

Beyond academics, Lisa took full advantage of Norway’s stunning nature and travel opportunities. A self-organised trip to the Lofoten Islands was the highlight of her semester, while visits to Bergen, Lillehammer and Oslo enriched her experience. The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) at NTNU also played a crucial role in offering numerous trips and activities, making it easier for international students to explore Norway. Trondheim itself is an ideal destination for students who appreciate nature. Despite being one of Norway’s largest cities, it remains small and manageable compared to major German cities. Its youthful atmosphere, driven by a large student population, made it a vibrant and welcoming place to live and study.

Reflecting on her experience, Lisa strongly encourages others to embark on a semester abroad. Beyond learning about a new country, she found it to be an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery.

You not only learn a lot about the other country, but also a lot about yourself.

Her time at NTNU has been an enriching adventure – one that she would gladly repeat. For those considering studying in Norway, Trondheim and NTNU offer an unforgettable experience, both academically and personally.
