BIP at KU Leuven 2025

During the third week of March, from 17th to 21st, students worked in a multinational and multidisciplinary team on “Smart sustainable food production and technology of the future” in the frames of the Blended Intensive Program (BIP) Block Week.

The claim on resources, energy and space requirements for food production in the western world is gigantic. For sure there is room for improvement.

Considering that producing one cup of coffee requires 100 liters more water than one cup of tea and factoring in the debate over using corn for food versus fuel, it’s clear that sustainable food production involves many more issues than just the meat versus vegetables discussion.

During this BIP week, we investigated a broad range of influential factors and potential solutions, ranging from food, water (ab)use over climate change impact and energy input in food production and transport to feed  the growing world population.

In total 75 students from the Consortium (FH Dortmund, KU Leuven and UPV/EHU) did their best to absorb knowledge on the topic and translate it into board games to engage the general public.
