Bridging Cultures and Advancing Sustainability: Insights from the Blended Intensive Programme in Bilbao
The Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Sustainability and Quality” hosted in Bilbao from November 22 to 30, 2024, exemplifies the intersection of sustainability, quality, and intercultural learning. Organized by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU, Spain), in collaboration with University of Applied Science and Arts (FH Dortmund, Germany) and KU Leuven (Belgium), the program brought together students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.
The Blended Intensive Programme focused on the theme of sustainability in product development and management, addressing key issues that are fundamental to the creation of a sustainable future. Dr. Pello Jimbert (UPV/EHU) introduced the EFQM Model for organisational quality, a globally recognized framework that emphasizes excellence, self-evaluation and adaptability.
Dr. Peter Arras (KU Leuven) addressed the environmental impact of food systems, presenting resource-efficient strategies for sustainable food production and consumption. Dr. Carolina Cruz (UPV/EHU) emphasized the incorporation of sustainability into project management with the introduction of innovative methodologies, including the Digital Sustainability Canvas. Finally, Dr. Maider Iturrondobeitia (UPV/EHU) presented an in-depth analysis of product life cycle thinking, illustrating the significance of life cycle analysis (LCA) for evaluating sustainability across production stages and fostering a circular economy. During the week, students worked in mixed international teams to develop real-life projects focused on sustainability and quality, applying their knowledge to practical, collaborative challenges.
Beyond academics, the program offered participants a unique opportunity to gain intercultural competence. Intercultural training sessions emphasized understanding diverse perspectives – a vital skill in today’s globalized world. Participants also enjoyed cultural immersion, such as experiencing Basque gastronomy, enriching their understanding of local traditions.
The BIP in Bilbao combined learning about sustainability with opportunities for cultural exchange, helping students build both knowledge and connections. By working together across cultures, participants gained valuable skills to tackle global challenges and prepare for meaningful careers in a connected world.
