IEEE E-TEMS 2020 Conference
March 4 - March 7
In line with Dortmund’s main topic “Smart City”, around 70 participants discussed topics such as “Transforming towards Digital Cities”, “Being Mobile in Smart Cities” or “Living in Smart Cities” in presentations and workshops from 4th to 7th March 2020.
The conference took place in the frame of the 2020 IEEE European Technology & Engineering Management Summit, which was brought to the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts by our guest lecturer from the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences – Dr. Beverly Pasian. There were guests not only from the EuroPIM Consortium, but also from programme partners like Ukraine (in frame of Ostpartnerschaften) and Kazakhstan and new organizations from Germany and the world.
Leading experts in the relevant research topics raised discussions with keynote speeches, including the Chief Information & Innovation Officer (CIIO) of the City of Dortmund, Dr. Jan Fritz Rettberg. From the presentation of the “Allianz Smart City Dortmund”, there was a seamless transition to one of the central topics of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the university development project “Smart Rhino”, which was presented by the Vice Rector for Teaching and Studies, Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel. This core project for the “University of the Future” and the future strategy of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts were discussed with great interest.
The experiences of conference participants from the development of their own innovation locations – including Bilbao, Leuven and Netanya – will also be fruitful for “Smart Rhino”. For example, they reported on how to create a “climate of innovation”, how relevant the topic of “Quality of Life” is for the development of a location and how cooperation between universities and companies can be organized.
The fact that the world’s largest professional association for digitalization “Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers” (IEEE) has now dealt with the management of digital transformation for the first time at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts clearly shows how we as a university are now positioned.
The event gave rise to ideas for research formats and the participation of students and doctoral candidates, which are now being processed in the international academic community. The participants submitted the evaluation form, from which we received positive responses about the conference as well as the workshops. Involving the workshops into the IEEE E-TEMS 2020 conference created the new format of the event performance and got a very positive feedback from the participants. The combination of discussions and practical tasks together with the presentation of the latest scientific works attracted researchers as well as practitioners from different fields of studies.
The event is planned to take place for the next 5 years in 5 locations of the EuroPIM consortium, starting the series of these events in 2021 again in Dortmund.
